The Historical Centre

If you have at your disposal a few hours, you can use them as follows

The itinerary starts at Prato Cathedral (dedicated to St. Stephen) wonderful example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, adorned with splendid frescos (Paolo Uccello, Filippo Lippi, Agnolo Gaddi).
After the Cathedral the route continues towards the Town Square and Palazzo Pretorio, seat of the museum that houses a valuable collection with works by Filippo and Filippino Lippi. Continuing on Via Ricasoli in direction of San Francesco Square you will find the Roncioni Library built in the mid eighteenth century thanks to a bequest by Marco Roncioni.

Entering the square stands San Francesco Church built at the turn of the XIII-XIV century. Inside the church, on the floor, before climbing the steps leading to the main altar, is the tombstone of Francesco Datini.

Continuing on the left side of the Church you arrive in Santa Maria delle Carceri square recently redesigned, where there are two of the main monuments of the city centre, the Emperor's Castle and the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri.
Continuing towards San Marco square from Viale Piave along the way of the Keep you can see the structure that gives the name to the street. The medieval Keep, fortified walkway on two levels, which put in direct connection the walls near the Florentine Gate with the inside of the castle.

Being in S. Marco square you can not help but to notice a large marble installation "Square shape with cut" by Henry Moore, the first major work of art acquired by the city, which has become over time a symbol of Prato calling for contemporaneity.
The placing of the work by Moore was the first piece of urban art trail currently housed in the city centre.
